Created by Benjamin Franklin is a very well known political cartoon, "Join, or Die", and first published in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. The earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union of the original publication was by the Gazette was produced by a British colonist in America.
It was a woodcut showing a snake that was severed into eighths, each segment labeled with the initials of a British American colony or region. New England was represented as only one segment, rather than the four colonies it had been at that time. Also Delaware and Georgia were omitted completely. Thus, it had 8 segments of the snake rather than the traditional 13 for the 13 colonies. Along with Franklin's editorial about the "disunited state" of the colonies, helping him make his point about the importance of colonial unity was the cartoon "Join, or Die".
